Implant Dentistry Holmdel
When you are missing some teeth, one of the options your Holmdel dentist may present to you is dental implants. Dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone beneath the gum line. They are necessary in order for your periodontist to put replacement teeth into that area. Unlike dentures, dental implants don't come lose and benefit your oral health because they don't have to be anchored on to other teeth.
Bone Grafts
When opting to get the procedure, healthy gums and good bone structure that supports the implant are pre-requisites. If your bones are too soft or thin, they may not be able to support an implant. When this happens, your periodontist may recommend that you undergo bone grafting for dental implants.
Bone Grafting Procedure
Bone grafting is a procedure in which you add bone to your jaw. The added bone could be from your own natural bone from another part of your body, a donor bone, or processed or synthetic bone grafting material.
The most common bone grafts are the following:
· The "Socket Graft"
· The "Block Bone Graft"
· The "Sinus Lift Procedure"
Your oral surgeon will recommend one or a combination of the aforementioned bone grafts. Basically, what happens is a bone graft will be placed in the oral cavity that will bind together with your existing jawbone. Depending on the advice of your surgeon, you may be able to immediately place the dental implant or you will need to wait several months until the graft can create enough strong bone to hold the new dental implant into place.
A bone grafting procedure is usually a quick procedure that can be performed in the periodontist’s office and requires anesthesia on the affected areas. After the procedure, you will be prescribed antibiotics and pain medication and given other aftercare instructions. Usually, the grated bone will fuse with your existing bone in about 3 or more months.
